The McRib Challenge

Updated: Feb 10, 2021

I like food. A lot. And, sadly, this means I struggle with my weight. I mean I have struggled with my weight all my life. I like to blame genetics, and I make my Doctor test my thyroid for dysfunction every time I have blood work, but it's always normal. The truth is I love my carbs. My favorite food is french fries. I never met one I didn't love. I have always proclaimed that when I get to heaven I just know I will be able to eat all the french fries dipped in mayonnaise that I want and still be slim and trim.

Yes, that is my idea of heaven.

I love to cook also. I guess it may be about creating something that makes people happy? Or makes people happy MOST times. I have had a few dismal kitchen failures that didn't make people very happy. For me it's science and art all combined together and I love it. It's cathartic to me. If I'm sad or bored I know a good kitchen sesh will improve my day. Sometimes I kitchen binge and spend a whole weekend making all kinds of stuff. I love to do riffs on ordinary recipes to make something creative and different.

Like one time I spent a weekend doing riffs on chicken and waffles - except I did pancakes and other meats. I did pulled pork & pancakes topped with bourbon maple syrup and also fried quail & pancakes topped with jalapeno orange syrup. YUMMY.

I love to make things and give them away to friends and family. One time I spent a weekend making pies and then posted on Facebook that there was a cooler full of slices at my front door and invited anyone to help themselves to a slice or two. Snapped up in no time.

And think about it. Some of our best times are when we are sharing a meal with people we like. Conversations around a dinner table make for lasting memories. Depending on the subject and the amount of wine being consumed, they can also make for interesting arguments. Sometimes maybe even hazy confessions. Much of our social life revolves around food, celebrations revolve around food, we soothe ourselves with food, we battle food, we bargain with food, we express love through food.

Food is a big deal.

Anyway, about the McRib Challenge. Everyone knows that every once in a while McDonald's rolls out the McRib sandwich as a special menu item. It seems to have sort of a cult following and people feel very strongly about it one way or the other. My Cousin Kirk from Kentucky recently stated that he had never tasted a McRib, and I responded that I hadn't either but would certainly give it a whirl if he would. GAME ON. He suggested that we video our tastings, so we did. I finally got up the nerve to post my video to social media and it seemed that people kinda liked watching it.

So here it is. The McRib aka McSauce Challenge. Apologies for the shoddy videography. I had no idea what I was doing! LOL
